Cribbage and Cocktails

There are times in your life when you look around and wonder "How did I get here?"

This happened when Patrick and I jumped onto a small long tail boat and headed around the island to Relax Beach (literally- so dorky).  Staying in a picturesque, off the grind bungalow, overlooking the ocean, we quickly fell into vacation bliss.

We ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the beach.

We splurged on ridiculously delicious fresh fruit cocktails made by the thirteen year old bartender.

And spent our afternoons playing cribbage.

Runtee Beach

After hiking to the top of Phi Phi, Patrick and I decided to test our luck by choosing a random trail down to an unknown beach on the other side of the island.  After a little bit of eeny-meeny-miny-moe we decided to follow the arrow toward Runtee.

We chose wisely.

After spending the rest of the day on a secluded, pristine beach, we peeled our bodies off the white sand and trudged back up over the hill to take in the debauchery of Phi Phi's night life.

Phi Phi from Above

Patrick and I left Railay and  followed the masses to the famous island of Phi Phi.  Traditionally a breathtaking island, it has survived despite hoards of tourists drinking booze out of buckets and even a tsunami.  After spending a day boarded up in our little hotel room trying to evade the painful rays of the sun (we got a little [aka very] burnt on our last day at Railay) we trekked up the hillside to take in the island from above.

Viewpoints, Lagoons, and Phallic Caves

When in Railay, you hear about the hike you can take to the viewpoint and lagoon.  Basically everyone says to just follow the signs and make sure to go during high tide or else you'll only discover a mud puddle.  What almost everyone forgets to mention is the ridiculous scramble you must make up a ninety degree slippery mountain in order to get there.

The view from above is worth the muddy climb and you are greeted with a panoramic  of Railay West, Railay East, and Tonsai Beach.

Of course you are also no doubt sweating profusely in the hot hot heat.
See picture below for visual image:

After the scramble up, you are then presented with the daunting challenge of the scramble down into the lagoon.  This is what I was not prepared for (especially doing it by myself).  Long story short, I had to overcome my fear of not being able to make it back out if I survived propelling myself over four mini cliffs of sharp, slippery rocks, holding onto a rickety muddy rope for my life.  One cut foot later, I arrived at the bottom of the lagoon to be met by a festive Russian couple who gladly took another sweaty picture of me:

Once I made it back up and over the lagoon, I hobbled over to the ocean to clean off the newly caked on red mud.  Emerging from the water I was confronted by large phallic images.  Local legend states that the fertility goddess resides in a cave near the sea and local fisherman and their wives come to leave gifts and rub the phallic statues for good luck.

Viewpoints, lagoons, and phallic caves.  Just another great day in Thailand.

Railay West

If there's ever a place to return to........

Tonsai Beach

Discovering magical beaches is the travelers dream.   Because they are often few and far between,  Patrick and I wholeheartedly soaked up the sun, the sea, and the mountains while in the breathtakingly gorgeous southern province of Railay.
